Curriculum Summary

What will your child learn?

In providing for your children we are guided by the requirements of the National Curriculum and the requirements of Hampshire County Council.

The provision of education at Burghclere Primary School takes account of every aspect of a child’s development. The curriculum gives children the opportunity to achieve the highest possible standards of English and Mathematics whilst ensuring they can become confident in physical, artistic, practical and social skills. We provide a broad and balanced education, allowing for the individual needs of each child to be met within well-planned learning experiences. We use an integrated approach and teach learning skills throughout the curriculum.

Curriculum planning involves all members of the teaching staff to ensure there is progression and continuity in learning as your child passes through the school.  All our planning processes give due regard to the requirements of the National Curriculum.

In Year R your child will follow the Foundation Stage of Education. This is the education programme for 3-5 year olds, that your child will have started in pre-school. The activities given to your child will help to develop speaking and listening, mathematical and manipulative skills. Some activities will be individual and others will require working as a group, helping your child to develop co-operation and independence. Through topic work your child will learn more about their world.

Our Curriculum

At Burghclere Primary School we have given a great deal of thought to establishing a curriculum that will educate children for the 21st century.

We believe children will need to be:

  • Literate
  • Numerate
  • Knowledgeable
  • Confident
  • Self motivated
  • Be able to:
    • Work on their own
    • Work with other people
    • Use and question information and communication technology
    • Think creatively
    • Solve problems

Our Ethos Values

As a school community, we believe that the ethos of the school should be built on a foundation of carefully thought out values.

The staff, governors and children have agreed the following core

values:

Trust

Respect

Enthusiasm

Engagement

The ethos values will help us sustain an ethos which supports pupils as   reflective learners and promote    quality teaching and learning.

We hope that our ‘TREE’ values will help children understand that there are some central beliefs that people hold.

Our Five Key Learning Values

The staff and Governors have developed and agreed the following 5 values:

  • Thinking
  • Independence
  • Individuality
  • Creativity
  • Collaboration

These learning values, along with our ethos, support the development of the whole child and prepare them for the 21st century.

They are underpinned by:

Challenge                             Active participation              Enjoyment

Fulfilment                              Reflection                                          Discovery

Personal Intelligence                      Play                                        Freedom

These learning values, along with our ethos, support the development of the whole child and prepare them for the 21st century.

The school’s Learning Values have been created to raise standards by promoting a school curriculum which encourages creativity, independence, individuality, collaboration and thinking.

We will regularly review our learning values to sustain a curriculum which promotes high quality learning and teaching for learning.
